American cyclist Nicholaus Schreiber won the 2008 Invitational Deaf Tour de Formosa, and American Trevor Kosa placed third. The Tour was an international deaf cycling competition created to promote awareness of the 2009 Deaflympics, slated to take place in Taiwan in September of 2009; to develop awareness of cycling in Taiwan; and to encourage Taiwanese youth development in the sport of cycling.
The five-day stage race started in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei on November 3rd, traveled over a total of 890 kilometers around the island, and ended back in Taipei on November 8th. The Tour was important enough for 50,000 police officers to close the roads during the race and protect the deaf cyclists as they passed through.
Participating nations included Australia, the Czech Republic, France, South Africa, USA, and Taiwan. The Taiwanese organizing committee for the 2009 Deaflympics selected the two best cyclists from each country based on their past performance in Deaflympics and World Championships and invited them to the competition.
